Today was a long, interesting day. Four of us from Volunteers in Panama drove up to Colon to meet some very special people who are helping us with our efforts in that area. It was my first visit to Colon and it was very sobering. The town is so run down and poverty-ridden it’s hard to believe your eyes. The ‘old folks home’ that we visited is located in an area dubbed ‘Vietnam’, and is surrounded by territorial gangs. The people in the home do not go out because it is too dangerous. It was quite depressing. The orphanage/girls’ home is one we went to before, and in far worse condition than the ‘old folks home’. As I looked around me questioning why the world is the way it is, this little dragonfly landed – practically begging me to take its picture – so I did! :-). Needless to say, it brightened my day.
