After arriving back in Panama, my husband announced that he had the perfect subject for my ‘photo of the day’. He went on to describe where it was located in the backyard – near the cucumber plants, along the property wall. What I was looking for was a big spider. Needless to say, I never expected it to be as big as this! If I had any courage at all, I would have put something beside it so that it would be easier to reflect some perspective as to its size. It had to be at least 4 inches! While I was snapping shots of him, however, along flew a wasp – right into the grasp of Mr. Giant Spider! The spider crouched and then lunged to grab him. Yay – perspective! Anyone know what kind of spider this is?

I have just learned that this is a Golden Orb spider, and is named because of the golden hue of the web they spin. Their bite is similar to a Black Widow Spider, however their venom is not as powerful. I don’t think I want him in my backyard anymore!!
