365 Day Photo Challenge – Day 110

There still seems to be quite a few jellyfish along the beach here in Coronado these days, despite the fact that the ‘jellyfish season’ has passed. What I find very interesting is seeing the different types of jellyfish. When I Googled ‘types of jellyfish’, I learned that there are more than 2000 discovered species of jellyfish. I also learned that Jellyfish have existed in our world for more than 650 million years, since even before the dinosaurs!

The one I show here in my photo was one of the eight or so that I saw on the beach this morning. There were predominantly two different kinds today – some that look like a big blob of mush, and ones like these in the photo. This kind reminds me of a mushroom, and definitely has a bluish hue to it. No long tentacles are evident. There are very few times in my life when I thought it would be neat to be a scientist, but when it comes to these creatures, I think I would find it interesting to examine how their translucent bodies are made up, and how they function.
