365 Day Photo Challenge – Day 30

Life's changes

As I set out on my morning 6km walk with Jaco at about 8:30am, and approached our gate, there was a dog passing by which got Jaco barking madly. I waited for the dog to go farther down our street before we went out, so that Jaco wouldn’t try chasing it. Jaco is a Panamanian street dog who we ‘rescued’ thanks to PAL – the Panama Animal League. (PAL takes as many homeless dogs in as they can, spays/neuters them, gives them their shots and finds great new homes for these ever-so-grateful animals.) Needless to say, Jaco is still learning his manners as well as trying to learn that he doesn’t have to chase everything that moves!

Up the main road we went, heading towards the golf course where we turn in. About half a kilometer in, I caught a dog out of the corner of my eye that was following right on my heels, and Jaco hadn’t even noticed her! This little dog actually followed me this way during the entire 6 kilometers! She was so sweet! Whenever I would turn to look at her she would shy away and be ready to bolt. Jaco tried to scare her away a couple of times, to no avail. This little girl was persistent! The poor little thing was just a bag of bones, as you can see in the photo.

This little lamb followed me right home and right into the yard. Of course Jaco was driving her crazy – being the boy that he is, but she kept putting him in his place over and over again, lol. I gave her some food, water and lots of love, and called my friend Linda from the Panama Animal League, who promised to find a home for this little one. We kept her around all day until Linda came, and I must admit I was sad to see her leave. She was just starting to warm up to us and she was just so incredibly sweet! She will be well cared for now, and not have to worry about where her next meal will come from or where she can sleep in peace. One more dog off the streets of Panama :-)!

  1. Great story AND it’s nonfiction! The little girl is going to the vet tomorrow to get her blood work, vaccines and general work up done. If she’s healthy enough, she’ll be spayed soon so she doesn’t have any more litters of pups. Finally, she will be placed in her forever home. Thank you Denise, Kirk and Nathan for your care, love and efforts toward the little street dog you named Sierra.
